Anthony Kiedis is a singer of the hugely successful alternative rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. He and His classmates at Fairfax High School founded RHCP in 1983.

Over a career spanning four decades, Anthony Kiedis has cemented himself as one of rock music’s most dynamic frontmen as the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. From his early days in LA’s punk scene to global stardom.

Anthony Kiedis was born in 1962 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His parents split up when he was still very young, and he moved to LA as a preteen to live with his father, who performed under the stage name Blackie Dammett. It was growing up in California that Kiedis met Michael “Flea” Balzary and Hillel Slovak, who would later form the nucleus of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

As students at Fairfax High School, Kiedis, Flea, Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons founded the band that would become the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1983. After going through several early name and lineup changes, the group began to hone the funk-infused rock sound that would become their signature style.

Though the Red Hot Chili Peppers received some acclaim for their early albums, it wasn’t until 1991’s ‘Blood Sugar S*x Magik’ that they achieved widespread commercial success. The album, propelled by hits like “Under the Bridge” and “Give it Away,” turned the band into global stars and brought their blend of funk, rock and rap to the mainstream.

Behind the scenes, Kiedis struggled with d*ug addiction throughout the band’s early years. He*oin and coc*ine use resulted in multiple rehab stints and near-death experiences over the course of the 1980s and 90s. After finally getting clean in 2000, Kiedis emerged with a new commitment to healthy living that enabled him to continue fronting the band.

Anthony Kiedis’ Early Years in Michigan and California

RHCP Star Anthony also has a sibling brother James Kiedis who was born in 1988. His parents divorced when he was three years old in 1966, after which he was raised primarily by his mother in Michigan. Later his mother remarried and had two more children Jenny Noble, and Julie Noble.

Summers Spent Bonding with His Father Every summer until he turned 12, Kiedis would visit his father in Hollywood for two weeks.

“Those trips to California were the happiest, most carefree, the-world-is-a-beautiful-oyster times I’d ever experienced.”

He cherished this special time with his dad, who exposed him to the world of show business. Kiedis idolized his father and considered these trips to be some of the happiest memories of his childhood.

Moving to LA at Age 12 In 1974, at the age of 12, Kiedis moved from Michigan to California to live with his father full-time and pursue his own dreams in the entertainment industry. This move marked a major transition in his life.

Meeting His Bandmates at Fairfax High It was after relocating to LA that Kiedis met Michael “Flea” Balzary and Hillel Slovak, who were students at Fairfax High School. The three bonded over their shared passion for music, laying the foundation for their future band.

Forming the Red Hot Chili Peppers While still teenagers, Kiedis, Flea, and Slovak started a band that went through several early names and lineups before evolving into the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Kiedis recruited drummer Jack Irons, and the foursome began honing the energetic funk-rock sound that the band would become known for.

Anthony Kiedis Introduced to D*ugs by His Father at a Young Age

Anthony Kiedis’ father, an actor who went by the stage name Blackie Dammett, sold and used d*ugs recreationally. As a child, Kiedis was exposed to mar**uana and coc*ine by doing d*ugs alongside his dad. This early d*ug use with his father normalized substance abuse from an early age.

At just 14 years old, Kiedis accidentally tried he*oin for the first time, mistaking it for coc*ine. This marked the start of his lifelong addiction to opiates. As a teenager, Kiedis developed a serious dependency on he*oin that he would struggle to overcome as an adult.

Kiedis made attempts to get clean over the years by entering d*ug rehabilitation programs. However, he relapsed into opiate addiction repeatedly, including in the 2000s when he was prescribed painkillers after surgery. His d*ug dependency spanned decades.

After years of struggle, Kiedis has been sober since December 24, 2000. He has publicly discussed his journey to sobriety and his desire to maintain a healthier lifestyle. Now in his 60s, he has overcome one of the biggest battles of his life and no longer uses hard d*ugs.
