Jeremiah Collins, an Austin Peay football player, died in a single-car collision in Tennessee at the age of 18 on Friday. Jeremiah Collins, an athlete for Austin Peay State University when passed away on Friday night when his pickup apparently rolled as it left a Clarksville freeway.
According to a news release from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Collins, an 18-year-old defensive back, was exiting a freeway when he drove too fast, causing his pickup truck to roll multiple times before coming to rest in a grassy area.
Collins was treated at the crash site, where police reported that there were no symptoms of intoxication. He was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later determined to be dead.
“We are all devastated and heartbroken by the loss of Jeremiah Collins,”
Austin Peay coach Scotty Walden said in a statement released by the school.
“Jeremiah was an outstanding young man who brought an incredible attitude and energy every day. We grieve with the Collins family for their tragic loss and lift them up in prayer.”
The upcoming defensive back was a three-star prospect for Austin Peay’s 2023 class. He was raised in Louisville, where he also participated in high school football.
In the spring, he received his degree.
For his senior year, he changed schools to Oakland High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
“All of our thoughts and prayers are with the Collins Family today,” Austin Peay athletic director Gerald Harrison said in a statement.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Jeremiah, and we will do everything we can to support his friends, family and teammates at this time.”

Collins was allegedly driving too fast before the incident, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department sent to the Washington Post.
Collins was pronounced dead after arriving at a nearby hospital, according to the police, who claimed he did not appear to be intoxicated.

In addition to his parents, he is also mourned by his stepfather, James Monroe, Sr. Jeremiah was a cherished sibling to Xavier Collins, Erick Lindsay, James Monroe, Jr., Jayshawn Monroe, Darias Collins, Nicole Santander, and Nicari Polk. The loss of his grandmother, Cheryl Polk, has deeply affected the family. Jeremiah’s extended family includes Dondi Santander, Ken Cartwright, and grandparents Melvin Collins, Sr., Deborah Wilson, and her husband David, and Reginal Watkins.
As a standout athlete, he made his mark as a star player at Male High School and later at Oakland High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. His exceptional skills earned number one defensive back in regions 4-6A football, ranking an impressive 14th in the state of Tennessee. Jeremiah played a pivotal role in securing a state championship for Oakland High School, further cementing his legacy on the football field.
Notably, he showcased his dedication to academics, maintaining an outstanding 3.70 GPA during his senior year.
Jeremiah Collins Funeral
The funeral arrangements for Jeremiah Collins, the talented young athlete whose life was tragically cut short, have been announced. Family and friends will have the opportunity to pay their final respects during the visitation scheduled for Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Woodfin Memorial Chapel from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. Following the visitation, a solemn funeral service will be held at 6:00 PM to honor Jeremiah’s memory.
During the funeral service, Jeremiah Collins will be laid to rest with dignity and respect, with a group of close friends serving as pallbearers. Xavier Collins, Quincy Jackson, Carlos Wade, Bronson Crisp, Eric Taylor, Terell Franklin, CJ Puckett, Kameron Floyd, Kade Hewitt, and Bryson Gaiter will have the honor of carrying Jeremiah to his final resting place.

In a heartfelt gesture, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Jeremiah’s name to the Oakland High School Football program, where he left an indelible mark, or to the Austin Peay State University Football program, representing his aspirations for a promising future.
