Malcolm Nance’s Early Life and Family Legacy of Military Service
Malcolm Wrightson Nance was born on September 20, 1961, in Philadelphia into a long lineage of military service. His family’s defense service dates back over 150 years.
His great-great-grandfather was the first in the family line to serve when he fought in the U.S. Civil War. Nance’s father was a highly decorated World War I and World War II veteran who reached the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer in his long Naval career. Additionally, five of Nance’s brothers served in the U.S. Navy.
Nance’s mother comes from Charleston, South Carolina, home of the origin of his family’s last name. His mother’s side of the family were former slaves who took the last name of their owner, a white slaveholder named Nance. Nance’s father’s side of the family migrated from Georgia.

Malcolm Nance spent his formative years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended St. Thomas More High School, a private Catholic academy for boys. He later transferred to Edwin H. Vare Junior High to study Spanish, Latin, French and other advanced language courses. As a youth, he self-studied Russian and Chinese languages during supplemental courses at South Philadelphia High School on Saturdays.
After high school, Nance earned a Bachelor’s degree from New York’s Excelsior University as an adult student.

Malcolm Nance Invites Public to Attend Wife Maryse’s Funeral
On September 19th, renowned security expert Malcolm Nance released a personal statement across social media platforms welcoming the general public to take part in honoring his late wife’s life. Earlier that week, Maryse Beliveau-Nance had passed away at age 60 after a valiant battle against ovarian cancer.
Maryse’s funeral service commenced at 11:00 am ET in Washington D.C. and was live-streamed globally on Facebook and YouTube. Nance encouraged universal participation in the event via internet access, allowing Maryse’s spirit to be celebrated far and wide. The funeral lasted around one hour and twenty minutes, concluding at 12:20 pm ET.
By warmly including world viewers in his family’s intimate grieving, Malcolm Nance demonstrated enormous grace during devastating loss.
Malcolm and Maryse Adopted Russian Children
In 2004, Nance’s wife Maryse adopted three young children from Moscow – a daughter and two sons. Although Maryse tragically passed away 15 years later, the couple treasured their children and the family they formed.

When the Nance family welcomed the children, they were only 8, 10, and 11 years old. The youth had their entire lives ahead of them when they joined the household. According to Nance, the kids were aged 8, 10, and 11 respectively when 9/11 happened back in 2001 – showing their young age at adoption.
While Nance keeps details about his children private, he shared a photo on Instagram of his 30-year-old daughter as an adult. Her appearance and short hair resemble her late mother. Out of courtesy to his family, Nance refrains from divulging his children’s names publicly.
When asked if his kids would follow the generations-long family tradition of military service, Nance definitively responded, “Not at all.” He instead focused his parental energy on nurturing his children throughout their formative pre-teen years.
Malcolm Nance Targeted by Dangerous Death Threats
Malcolm Nance dedicated over 20 years to naval intelligence and counterterrorism efforts to keep America safe, serving in national security roles from 1981 to 2001. But protecting his country has come at a great personal cost for his family.
In April 2018, Nance shared on Twitter that his family received horrific death threats from anonymous individuals. The messages included sickening threats of s*xual violence towards his wife and daughter.

These threats were traced back to false allegations published involving Nance. An editor from Breitbart, Alex Marlow, wrongly claimed Nance advocated terrorist action against a Trump building. Marlow provided no evidence to support his dangerous defamatory statements.
Nance bravely confronted Marlow’s lies by tweeting:
“Show me the story. And if the story is as you describe it, I’ll be happy to offer an apology.”
But no such story was produced. Still, Marlow’s disinformation ignited real-world harassment from his followers.
