The Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP) is an American rock band known for their fusion of funk, rock, and alternative music. They formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1983 and have since become one of the most successful and influential bands in the genre.
The RHCP’s breakthrough came with their 1991 album “Blood Sugar S*x Magik,” which spawned hit singles such as “Under the Bridge” and “Give It Away.” The album showcased the band’s unique style, combining catchy melodies, heavy basslines, and Kiedis’ distinct vocals.
Over the years, the RHCP released several critically acclaimed albums, including “Californication” (1999), “By the Way” (2002), and “Stadium Arcadium” (2006). They explored different musical styles and experimented with their sound, but always maintained their signature funk-driven rock sound.
John Frusciante left the band in 2009, and Josh Klinghoffer joined as his replacement. Klinghoffer contributed to two studio albums, “I’m with You” (2011) and “The Getaway” (2016), before Frusciante rejoined the band in late 2019.
The RHCP have received numerous accolades throughout their career, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. They have sold over 80 million records worldwide and continue to tour and perform for their dedicated fan base.

Anthony Kiedis
Anthony Kiedis is a singer with the hugely successful alternative rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. He and His classmates at Fairfax High School founded RHCP in 1983.
But the band’s most successful lineup wasn’t them but he has been the frontman ever since. His records with the Red Hot Chili Peppers have been certified both Gold and Platinum.
Flea (Michael Balzary)
Flea, whose real name is Michael Peter Balzary, is the bassist and one of the founding members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He co-founded the band in 1983 along with Anthony Kiedis and has been a constant member throughout their career.
In addition to his work with theRHCP, Flea has also collaborated with other musicians and artists. He is recognized as a multi-talented musician, and he has played trumpet, piano, and guitar on various recordings.
Hillel Slovak
Born on April 13, 1962, Hillel Slovak was an Israeli-American musician renowned as the founding guitarist of the iconic Los Angeles rock band, Red Hot Chili Peppers. He relocated to the United States from Israel and attended Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, where fate brought him together with future bandmates Anthony Kiedis, Flea, and Jack Irons. Slovak, along with Irons, Alain Johannes, and Todd Strassman, formed the band “What Is This?” at Fairfax High, with Flea eventually replacing Strassman.
In 1983, the dynamic quartet of Slovak, Flea, Kiedis, and Irons officially founded the RHCP.
On June 25, 1988, Hillel Slovak tragically passed away in his Hollywood apartment due to a heroin overdose. In the wake of Slovak’s death, Anthony Kiedis, the band’s lead vocalist, was deeply affected by the loss of his close friend. Kiedis left town and refrain from attending Slovak’s funeral as he grappled with the heartbreaking reality.
Jack Irons
Born on July 18, 1962, in Los Angeles, Jack Steven Irons is an American drummer. Growing up in a Jewish family, using household cutlery as makeshift drumsticks while jamming along to radio tunes. Encouraged by his parents, Irons received drum lessons and soon honed his skills.

During his time at Bancroft Jr. High School in Hollywood, fate would intertwine his path with future bandmates Michael “Flea” Balzary and Hillel Slovak.
Later attending Fairfax High School in Los Angeles alongside Balzary, Slovak, Anthony Kiedis, and Alain Johannes, the foundations of what would become the legendary RHCP were laid.
In 1983, Flea initiated a one-time band named “Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem,” featuring Kiedis, Slovak, and Irons. The chemistry among these musicians proved explosive, leading them to embrace their new identity as the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Flea (Since 1982)
Michael Peter Balzary, known worldwide as Flea, was born on October 16, 1962, in Melbourne, Australia. At the age of four, his family moved to New York following his parents’ divorce. However, later they moved to Los Angeles in 1972, where Flea’s step-father, a jazz musician named Walter Urban Jr., sought to pursue his musical career.
While his peers were drawn to the beats of disco and dance music, Flea found solace in the melodic world of jazz legends like Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.
Flea’s childhood was marred by domestic turmoil. His stepfather was an aggressive alcoholic who often led to violent incidents and confrontations with law enforcement.
Throughout his teenage years, Flea earned a peculiar nickname due to his perpetual restlessness – “Flea.”
Flea (Michael Peter Balzary) married twice
Flea has three kids and two marriages. Loesha Zeviar, whose name is still tattooed on Flea’s chest, and Flea were married from 1988 to 1990. Their child, Clara Louise Zeviar Balzary, was born in 1988. The Funky Monks documentary by the band included Clara.
She has also contributed artwork for the band’s T-shirts and promotional materials since she was a little child, made appearances at numerous concerts, and more.
Now, Flea (Michael Peter Balzary) was married to Australian fashion designer and model, Melody Ehsani. They got married in 2019.
Anthony Kiedis (Since 1983)
Anthony Kiedis was born on November 1, 1962, and is the lead vocalist of the RHCP. Kiedis is known for his energetic stage presence, distinctive vocal style, and his lyrical contributions to the band’s music.
Recently, Anthony Kiedis appeared on Sunday Brunch TV, where he shared his thoughts and emotions about an incredible milestone – forty years of being a band member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Anthony Kiedis never got married
He has been in several relationships over the years, but he has never publicly wed. Between 2004 and 2008, Kiedis was dating Heather Christie. On October 2, 2007, their son was born. A custody dispute between Kiedis and Christie erupted in March 2018.

Kiedis discussed his previous relationships in an interview from June 2016 and revealed that there were times when he had over 100 s*xual partners.
Despite Sinéad O’Connor’s denial, Keidis claims to have had a brief relationship with the singer in 1990, which gave him the idea for the song “I Could Have Lied” on Blood Sugar S*x Magik in 1991.
Additionally, he had a brief romance with Spice Girls singer Melanie “Sporty Spice” Chisholm, who served as the model for the character “Emit Remmus” in the 1999 film Californication. At a concert they gave in Japan in 1997, his band also performed a cover of “Wannabe.”

Chad Smith (Since 1988)
Chad Smith is the drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He joined the band in 1988, replacing their former drummer, Jack Irons. Smith’s powerful and energetic drumming style has been an integral part of the band’s sound and has contributed to their success.
In addition to his work with the RHCP, Chad Smith has also collaborated with other artists and has released solo material.

Smith has had two marriages. Smith had a daughter named Manon with Maria St John (born 1997) during their marriage, which lasted from 1993 to 1997.
Through past partnerships, he also has two further children: Justin Smith, a musician, was born in 1998, and Ava Maybee Cardoso Smith, a singer, was born in 2001.

Smith wed Nancy Mack, an architect, in 2004. They have three kids together, who were born in 2005, 2009, and 2012. In California’s Malibu, the family resides.
John Frusciante (Since 1988)
John Frusciante is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter who is best known for his work with the RHCP. He first joined the band in 1988, replacing Hillel Slovak, and played a significant role in shaping their sound during his tenure. Frusciante contributed to some of the band’s most successful albums, including “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” and “Californication.”
After leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992, Frusciante pursued a solo career and released several critically acclaimed albums. He then rejoined the band in 1998 and remained with them until 2009. During this second stint, the Red Hot Chili Peppers released albums like “By the Way,” “Stadium Arcadium,” and “I’m with You.”

Born in 1962, in Israel, 61 years ago today, Hillel Slovak’s musical journey began when his family moved to the United States at the age of four. Immersed in Los Angeles’ vibrant music scene, Slovak’s passion for guitar and rock ‘n’ roll took root, leading him to co-found the iconic band, Red Hot Chili Peppers.
On June 25, 1988, tragedy struck the music world when Hillel Slovak’s life was cut short by a devastating heroin overdose in his Hollywood apartment.
Jack Sherman
Born on January 18, 1956, in Miami, Florida, Jack Sherman’s passion for music took root at a young age. His family’s relocations to New York and California exposed him to diverse musical influences.
In December 1983, Jack Sherman joined as a second guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers, stepping in after Hillel Slovak’s departure. Sherman’s contributions were instrumental, as he played on the band’s debut album and co-wrote a significant portion of their second album, “Freaky Styley.”
Following his time with the band, he collaborated with esteemed musicians such as Bob Dylan, George Clinton, Feargal Sharkey, and Peter Case.

Tragically, Jack Sherman passed away at the age of 64 due to a heart attack at his home in Savannah, Georgia, on August 18, 2020. The Red Hot Chili Peppers paid tribute to their former bandmate, expressing gratitude for the memories they shared, both in times of triumph and adversity.
D. H. Peligro
Darren Eric Henley, known by his stage name D. H. Peligro, was a prominent figure in the punk rock scene. Best recognized as the drummer for The Dead Kennedys, Peligro’s musical journey also included a brief stint with the RHCP.
In 1988, Peligro stepped in as the drummer for RHCP, following the passing of guitarist Hillel Slovak. The band was recovering from the loss of their friend and fellow musician and had also brought in guitarist DeWayne McKnight. Peligro’s friendship with the band members dated back years, having previously collaborated with singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea in the comedy band, Three Little Butt Hairs.
On October 28, 2022, Peligro passed away at his Los Angeles home. Initial reports indicated an accidental fall causing trauma to the head. However, the official cause of death, released on May 2, 2023, revealed that he succumbed to an overdose from a dangerous mix of heroin and fentanyl. Additionally, it was disclosed that Peligro battled non-small cell lung cancer during his final days.
